The Silver Screen Soundtrack Hour presents Disasters!

Titanic - not a disaster at the box office!

Titanic - not a disaster at the box office!

Disaster movies are almost as old as movies themselves. Silent films like Fire! (1901) and Life of an American Fireman (1902) presented viewers with the vicarious thrill of experiencing the danger a burning building presented to its occupants.

Disaster movies are almost as old as movies themselves.

While disaster themes vary - shipwreck, storm, alien invasion - the best disaster movies need an effective soundtrack to work the audience’s emotions.

This week’s edition of The Silver Screen Sound Track Hour samples musical selections from James Horner (Titanic and The Perfect Storm), John Williams (The Towering Inferno), Dimitri Tiomkin (The High and the Mighty), and more. And along the way we’ll experience an alien invasion and more in-flight danger too!

Produced and hosted by Ken Nail, The Silver Screen Soundtrack Hour airs on Charlottesvilleclassical.org every Thursday at 9 AM and 6 PM, plus Saturdays at Noon. Visit our Facebook page, or contact Ken on Twitter at @ken_classical.
