Romantic Bassoon: Scandinavian Gems Rediscovered
Bassoonist Jaakko Luoma plays with a warm, honeyed tone. This makes slow movements especially delicious. And he can also play with agility when required.

Gould Piano Trio Launches Marschner Series
The Gould Piano Trio performs with warmth and sensitivity. Marschner’s music is expressive yet slightly reserved, and the trio plays as if engaged in conversation, at times making the music feel spontaneous.

Bruckner: From the Archives, Vol. 6
No matter how many Bruckner recordings you own, this series should be in your collection. There are some truly insightful performances here. And a few that made me hear these very familiar works in new ways.

New Series Showcases MacDowell’s Orchestral Works
MacDowell was one of the most important composers of his generation. This album provides some hints as to why. Future volumes should solidify that reputation.

Seasons Greetings from Franz Liszt!
Wojciech Walczek has the chops to play Liszt's knuckle-busters. But he dials it back. We get a performance that's sensitive and warm. I'll be adding this to my classical holiday playlists.

Auber Overtures Vol. 7 - More Than Just Openers
These ballets and incidental music show Auber's genius. His orchestrations set the stage and tell the story -- in music, not words. Another fine addition to this edition.

Bruckner From the Archives, Vol. 5 - Another Noteworthy Release
The penultimate volume in this series continues to surprise and illuminate. All recordings come from the archives of the Bruckner Society of America. Audio

Albert Dietrich - For Brahms Fans
The Solistes Europeens Luxembourg deliver some fine performances. Conductor Christoph Konig's interpretations are spot on.

Bruckner From the Archives, Vol. 4 Offers Stylistic Contrasts
Lani Spahr's superb restorations do much service to the music. He brings out the inherent qualities of these recordings. And he does so without unnaturally "enhancing the sound."
