British Piano Concertos - no fireworks, just great tunes
Looking for a recording of pleasant -- but worthwhile -- listening? Give this a spin. No fireworks here, but some great tunes nonetheless.
Eleanor Alberga Violin Concertos - collaborative classics
Eleanor Alberga and her husband Thomas Bowes make quite a team. As the piano/violin duo Double Exposure they toured and performed together. And they frequently performed Alberga's music. The blend of personal and artistic intimacy between the two inspired both.
Howard Griffiths presents Cipriani Potter
Howard Griffiths gives this music some spirited readings. Potter the composer had something to say beyond homages to Mozart and Beethoven. Griffiths lets him say it.
Rediscovered British Clarinet Concertos Deserve a Listen
Peter Cigleris has done a singular service by recording these works. It's not likely I'll ever hear any of them in live performances. And all four are works I've very glad I heard.
Gunning symphonies well-crafted modernism
Kenneth Woods leads the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in some superb performances. Woods has a clear artistic vision of how these symphonies should unfold.
