WorldView Episode 42: John Stanley (Holiday Show, pt. 2)

Thank you for joining me on charlottesvilleclassical.org for another special episode of WorldView! Much like last week’s show, this episode will focus on music celebrating winter holidays. The first airing on Monday, 12/26/22, coincides with the first day of Kwanzaa; the Saturday rebroadcast will air on New Year’s Eve, 12/31/22. This hour of WorldView will focus mainly on music for New Year’s Eve, including both classic works and new additions. Enjoy!

Charles John Stanley was born in London, England in 1712. After an accident suffered when he was two years old left him almost completely blind, Stanley began pursuing music and composition. By age seventeen, he had held two paid positions as a church organist and was the youngest person ever to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Oxford University. Stanley’s talent as both an organist and violinist attracted George Frideric Handel, who would often come to speak with the composer and watch him perform. Stanley himself directed many of Handel’s works, relying on his remarkable memory to remember entire works and accompany other artists and students. He served as chief organist for the Society of the Inner Temple from 1734 until his death in 1786.

This special episode of WorldView begins with Stanley’s “Trumpet Voluntary”, which is frequently heard around the new year. “Trumpet Voluntary” was originally featured in one of the composer’s volumes of voluntaries for organ; however, it was later arranged for trumpet and ensemble. In this hour, Stephen Burns and his ensemble perform John Stanley’s classic work.
