Koussevitzky@150: Koussevitzky as “Colorist”

Instrumental color was fundamental to conductor Serge Koussevitzky. His recordings of Ravel’s Bolero and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition demonstrate this.

Koussevitzky commissioned Ravel to orchestrate Mussorgsky’s work in 1922. In a sense, the master orchestral colorist provided the perfect showpiece for the master colorist conductor.
