Elmer Bernstein

From the jazzy riffs of The Man With the Golden Arm (1955); the bold western theme of The Magnificent Seven (1960), and the spot-on regimental march of The Great Escape (1963), Elmer Bernstein composed some of the most memorable film music of his time.

Elmer Bernstein (1922-2004)

More than just a composer, Bernstein was an educator, conductor, and producer of his own record label. From 1974 to 1979 he financed a set of mail-order LPs of film score recordings, The Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection, which featured recordings he conducted of notable film scores, including works by Bernard Herrmann, Miklos Rosza, Dimitri Tiomkin, and many more.

On this week’s Silver Screen Soundtrack Hour, we’ll present music by Elmer Bernstein, including music from The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, Airplane, and more.

Produced and hosted by Ken Nail, The Silver Screen Soundtrack Hour airs on Charlottesvilleclassical.org every Thursday at 9 AM and 6 PM, plus Saturdays at Noon. Visit our Facebook page, or contact Ken on Twitter at @ken_classical.
